River Dour Cycle Route

Barton Path

The proposals are to enhance the current River Dour Route to enable cyclists to use it as a safe and pleasant alternative to cycling on the busy one way road system.

The cycle scheme relates to the section of the route from Buckland Mill to the Seafront. The first phase runs from Buckland Mill to Park Street. Public consultation on phase one ended on the 5th March 2010. Click here to see comments and responses from the consultation.

The second phase will be the remainder of the route, which we will be consulting on at the end of 2010.

The propoals include:

  • Create a table top junction (raised to pavement level to slow traffic) at Bunkers Hill / London Road junction.
  • Upgrade current London Road crossing and reduce the road to single lane at crossing point.
  • A new, wider bridge for cyclists across the river next to Buckland bridge (subject to planning permission).
  • Widen the pavement around into Buckland Avenue to create a shared footway/cycleway.
  • Widen existing pavement between Buckland Avenue and Cherry Tree Avenue, removing one traffic lane to create a shared footway/cycleway.
  • Alteration of existing traffic signals on Cherry Tree Avenue to create a new single stage crossing.
  • Widening of pavement between Cherry Tree crossing and Barton Path to be a shared footway/cycleway.
  • Improvements to the pedestrian crossing at Bridge Street.
  • Widen the pavement alongside the retail park to create a shard footway/cycleway.
  • Widen the path through the Netto car park to Crafford Street (subject to agreement by the landowner).

This project is funded by Kent Higways Services and Sustrans Connect 2 Lottery funding.

The River Dour was identified as one of nine key public spaces that could benefit from improvement in the Dover Pride Public Realm Strategy.
