Dover Visuals
Latest

The Centurion House Box Gallery is in the building that locals
know as the old Indoor Market, on Bench Street. The Box Gallery
aims to brighten up and improve the area and provide a
temporary space for arts.
The building was bought by Dover District Council as part of the
DTIZ/St James' development. Unused for fifteen years, the descision
was taken to do something with the front of the building as the
cost of internal repairs, which would allow use of the whole floor,
is high.
Dover Town Council supported and helped fund this project.
Over the next couple of months a policy will be put together for
what is exhibited in the Box Gallery. Whilst this is developed the
first three exhibtions will be Jonathan Wright's Desire & Aspire and Edda
Venusia Jones' minD OVER
matter; Dover Girls Grammar School's Licking the Stones; and
Dover Arts Development's Resider/Reside.
Background
Dover Visuals is a project to engage the community in improving
the appearance of the town centre. The first stages of the project,
which are currently underway, will see two artists working
with the community to produce images to be used in empty shop
windows and on hoardings.
The shop window images are being produced by Jonathan Wright.
Jonathan has been in Dover talking to people who work and
use the town centre. These discussions will form the basis for the
work he will produce. You can view Jonathan's progress on
'Desire & Aspire' on his website.

Over the last few months Edda Venusia Jones has worked
with various groups to produce the images that can now be
seen on the hoardings around the former bus station on Russell
Street. To view Edda's process visit her mini site.
The third aspect of the project is to re-open the ground floor
windows of Centurion House, the old indoor market by the underpass.
The windows will become a display space which could be used in the
future for arts and local information.

Work can only be undertaken on empty shops where we can gain the
owners permission to do so. If you own a vacant property please get
in touch with Sarah Lang on 01304 872162 or sarah@doverpride.org.uk If you
know someone who owns an empty property please encourage them to
get in touch!
